Counseling Services

The Richard Regula Student Services Center (named for a valued staff member who worked for over 30 years in the district as a teacher, counselor and administrator) is currently comprised of five school counselors, one social worker, one school psychologist, and one support staff. Pupil Services focus on:

Behavior Management
Special Education Services and Assessment
Day Student Services
Scheduling and Transition Planning
Job Skills Training and Career Exploration
Consultation
Crisis intervention
Staff works with students to address their emotional, social, and behavioral needs through individual and group counseling. Students meet with their counselor on a regular basis, according to their Individual Education Plan. Issues that are often addressed include grief and loss, anger management, social and interpersonal skills, coping skills, and self-esteem/self-image. The Department staff work with all students at Hopevale School to help them create a positive peer culture that fosters belonging, mastery, independence and generosity. Furthermore, all counselors and the school psychologist are available on an as-needed basis to assist with crisis counseling. We believe it is important to allow students a structured opportunity to process their difficult emotions as well as evaluate their behavioral choices. It is in these instances that students begin to learn and reinforce the problem-solving and decision-making skills that will serve them well in the future.
