Hopevale School concentrates heavily on programs to assist its students to function effectively in the environment to which they will return. The school offers the same curriculum as standard public school districts and more. Educational programs include basic academic classes as well as vocational/occupational training, work study, extracurricular activities, accredited high school electives, guidance and psychological counseling.

A child may be placed at a special act school by a local school district, the Department of Social Services, New York State Division for Youth, or a county family court. Placement is ongoing throughout the school year and summer.
